NSF/ANSI 53, explained
NSF/ANSI 53 is the standard that matters when your concern is health rather than taste. But “certified to 53” on its own still does not tell you what a filter removes.
What NSF/ANSI 53 actually is
The full title is NSF/ANSI 53: Drinking Water Treatment Units — Health Effects. It sets minimum requirements for the materials, design, construction and performance of point-of-use and point-of-entry systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants.
The health effects in scope are pegged to what is regulated by the U.S. EPA and Health Canada. That regulatory anchor is what separates 53 from Standard 42, which has no such reference point.
It covers both point-of-use and point-of-entry systems. Point-of-entry products certified to 42, 53 or 55 must additionally comply with NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for material safety.
What can be certified under Standard 53
NSF describes Standard 53 as offering over 50 contaminant reduction claims. Each one is separate and elective — a manufacturer chooses which claims to pursue, and the certifier verifies only those. Commonly held claims include:

The PFAS threshold
To carry a PFAS reduction claim, NSF requires a filter to reduce PFAS to below 20 parts per trillion. The Total PFAS claim covers a defined set of seven compounds: PFHpA, PFHxS, PFNA, PFOA, PFOS, PFBS and PFDA.
This threshold is worth understanding in context. EPA's April 2024 enforceable limits for drinking water set PFOA and PFOS at 4.0 parts per trillion — lower than the certification threshold. The standards are being updated to align, with compliance dates later this decade. A current PFAS certification is meaningful, but it is not the same as certifying to the newest federal figures.
What NSF/ANSI 53 does not mean
Certification to Standard 53 is not blanket health protection. In NSF's own words: certification to an NSF/ANSI standard does not mean a filter will reduce all possible contaminants, and buyers should verify the product is certified for the specific contaminants of concern to them.
So “NSF/ANSI 53 certified” is an incomplete sentence. The complete one is “certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead” or “…for PFOA and PFOS.” NSF instructs buyers to look for both the standard name and a specific contaminant claim.
Two more limits worth knowing: certified systems are tested at 20 °C and have not been evaluated for contaminant reduction at elevated temperatures; and lead performance is validated on influent up to 150 ppb, not above it.
How to verify a Standard 53 claim
The only way to confirm a claim is the certifier's public database. Search by model number, not brand name, then check the specific reduction claim: NSF, IAPMO R&T, or WQA. A screenshot or PDF hosted on a manufacturer's own site is not verification — the live listing is.

What does NSF/ANSI 53 certify?
It certifies that a finished drinking water treatment unit reduces specific named health-related contaminants, such as lead, PFOA/PFOS or cysts. Each contaminant is a separate claim; certification to the standard alone does not cover all of them.
Is NSF/ANSI 53 certified good for PFAS?

Does NSF/ANSI 53 cover whole-house filters?
Yes, the standard covers both point-of-use and point-of-entry systems. However, whether any given whole-house product holds a particular claim is a separate question — for lead in particular, check carefully.
