NSF/ANSI 42, explained
NSF/ANSI 42 is the standard behind most “NSF certified” carbon filters on the shelf. It covers how water tastes and smells — not whether it is safe to drink.
What NSF/ANSI 42 actually is
The full title is NSF/ANSI 42: Drinking Water Treatment Units — Aesthetic Effects. Its stated purpose is to set minimum requirements for the materials, design, construction and performance of treatment systems designed to reduce specific aesthetic-related (non-health effects) contaminants.
That parenthetical is the standard's own language, and it is the entire point of the number. Standard 42 governs taste, odor, appearance and in-system effects. It is not a health standard, and it makes no health claim.
It applies to both point-of-use systems (under-sink units, pitchers, faucet mounts) and point-of-entry systems (whole-house units). So “whole house” tells you nothing about which standard a product is certified to.
What can be certified under Standard 42
Certification is granted claim by claim, not as a blanket. These are the reduction claims a product can actually hold under Standard 42 in NSF's certified-products database:
- Chlorine reduction — the most common claim on carbon filters
- Chloramine reduction
- Taste and odor reduction
- Particulate reduction (nominal)
- Zinc reduction
- Bacteriostatic effects — limits microbial growth inside the filter, which is not the same as treating microbes in your water
What NSF/ANSI 42 does not cover
This is where buyers get caught. A filter certified to Standard 42 has not been certified to reduce a single health contaminant. Lead, PFAS, arsenic, nitrate, cysts, VOCs, chromium — none of them fall under 42. Those live under NSF/ANSI 53 (and, for reverse-osmosis systems, NSF/ANSI 58).
A second trap: chlorine reduction and taste-and-odor reduction appear under both 42 and 53. Seeing either one on a label is not evidence that a product carries any health-effects certification.
Standard 42 also states in its own scope that systems it covers are not intended for water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system. On an untested private well, a carbon filter is not a safety device.
How to verify a Standard 42 claim
The only way to confirm a claim is the certifier's public database. Search by model number, not brand name, then check the specific reduction claim: NSF, IAPMO R&T, or WQA. A screenshot or PDF hosted on a manufacturer's own site is not verification — the live listing is.
Common questions
Is NSF/ANSI 42 good enough for lead?
No. Standard 42 covers aesthetic, non-health effects only. Lead reduction is certified under NSF/ANSI 53 or, for reverse-osmosis systems, NSF/ANSI 58. A product certified only to 42 has no verified lead claim.
Does NSF/ANSI 42 cover PFAS?
No. PFAS reduction claims are made under NSF/ANSI 53 and 58, not 42.
Is NSF/ANSI 53 better than NSF/ANSI 42?
They are different scopes, not tiers. NSF states the numbers reflect the order the standards were developed, not a ranking. 42 covers taste and odor; 53 covers health contaminants. Many products carry both.
