NSF/ANSI 401, explained
NSF/ANSI 401 sounds like the most advanced certification on the list. It is the most commonly misread — starting with the fact that it does not cover PFAS.
What NSF/ANSI 401 actually is
The full title is NSF/ANSI 401: Drinking Water Treatment Units — Emerging Compounds/Incidental Contaminants. It verifies a system's ability to reduce specific compounds that appear in drinking water at very low but measurable concentrations — described by the standard as not at definitive concentrations of known health concern.
It covers both point-of-use and point-of-entry systems. As with every other standard here, each compound is a separate elective claim: a product certified to 401 is not certified for all fifteen.

What NSF/ANSI 401 is not
It does not cover PFAS. This is the single most common error, and it is an easy one to make — “emerging contaminants” sounds like it should include the most famous emerging contaminant of all. It does not. PFAS claims are made under NSF/ANSI 53 and 58.
It is not a health-effects certification. That is Standard 53. The compounds under 401 are explicitly ones that are not currently regulated by EPA or Health Canada and for which evidence of health effects has not been established. NSF itself notes that at trace levels these are not considered a public health issue, while acknowledging that a large majority of consumers report concern about them.
It says nothing about lead, arsenic, nitrate, chlorine, cysts or hardness. A filter certified to 401 with no Standard 53 listing carries no verified health-contaminant claim at all.
When 401 is genuinely useful
None of the above makes Standard 401 worthless. If your specific concern is pharmaceutical residues, hormones or herbicide traces — a reasonable worry on some surface-water supplies — then a 401 claim for the named compound is real, verified evidence, and it is the only certification that addresses those compounds directly.
The honest framing is simply: 401 is an addition to a health certification, never a substitute for one.
How to verify a Standard 401 claim
The only way to confirm a claim is the certifier's public database. Search by model number, not brand name, then check the specific reduction claim: NSF, IAPMO R&T, or WQA. A screenshot or PDF hosted on a manufacturer's own site is not verification — the live listing is.

No. PFAS reduction claims are made under NSF/ANSI 53 and NSF/ANSI 58. Standard 401 covers a defined list of trace emerging compounds such as pharmaceuticals, herbicides and flame retardants.
Is NSF/ANSI 401 better than NSF/ANSI 53?
