NSF/ANSI 372, explained

NSF/ANSI 372 certifies that a product does not add lead to your water. It says nothing whatsoever about taking lead out. That difference is the most consequential misreading in the whole certification landscape.

What NSF/ANSI 372 actually is

The full title is NSF/ANSI/CAN 372: Drinking Water System Components — Lead Content. It provides a standardized method for verifying that a product's wetted surfaces contain almost no lead.

The threshold matches the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act definition of “lead free”: a weighted average of 0.25% lead across the wetted surfaces of a pipe, fitting or fixture, and 0.2% for solder and flux. It is a weighted average across the product, not a per-part limit.

It applies to anything that touches drinking water — valves, pipes, faucets, fittings, and yes, filtration system housings.

Content, not removal

This is the whole page in one line, and the Water Quality Association states it about as plainly as a certifier can:

How 372 differs from 61 — and from 53

Three standards get tangled together here. They are cleanly separable:

NSF states it directly about Standard 61: “This standard does not establish performance, taste and odor, or microbial growth support requirements.” Neither 61 nor 372 is a removal standard. Only 42, 53, 58 and 401 make performance claims.

Why the confusion is so easy

It is not merely careless marketing — the structure of the system invites the error.

372 is embedded inside real certifications. A genuine NSF/ANSI 53 certification already includes material-safety evaluation to 372. So a product certified only to 372 can advertise a true statement that sits in exactly the same visual register as a far stronger claim.

The marks look similar. NSF notes that the certification mark for components and for end products under Standard 61 is identical, except for point-of-entry components.

Component certification does not extend to the finished product. NSF is explicit: end-product certification does not extend to the components, and building a product from certified components does not certify the product.

How to check which one you are looking at

If a product's certification appears only in a lead-content or components database, or cites only 61 or 372, it is a material-safety listing — not a removal claim. A genuine removal claim appears in the drinking water treatment unit database under a named standard and a named contaminant.

The only way to confirm a claim is the certifier's public database. Search by model number, not brand name, then check the specific reduction claim: NSF, IAPMO R&T, or WQA. A screenshot or PDF hosted on a manufacturer's own site is not verification — the live listing is.

Common questions

Does NSF/ANSI 372 mean a filter removes lead?

No. Standard 372 certifies that the product itself contains almost no lead and therefore does not contribute lead to your water. Lead removal is certified under NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 with a specific lead reduction claim.

What does lead free mean under NSF/ANSI 372?

A weighted average of no more than 0.25% lead across the wetted surfaces of the product, and 0.2% for solder and flux — matching the Safe Drinking Water Act definition.

What is the difference between NSF/ANSI 61 and 372?

Standard 372 limits how much lead is in the material. Standard 61 limits what leaches out of the material into drinking water. Neither certifies that the product removes anything.
